Social Security Scam
How this scam works
Scammers using tactics of intermediation may call and claim to be an officer of the law. The scammers may claim to be working for law enforcement, IRS, or social security offices. Their goal is to use fear to steal money from victims. They may mention you are a target of identity theft or tax fraud, or a criminal investigation
Following up by saying you can clear this up by sending a payment to them. Otherwise, you may be arrested. They will request payment in the form of gift cards, sending cash to an address, or wire transfers.
Government agencies will not ask for payment using any of these methods. If you receive a call from a person claiming to be working for any of the government agencies above, you should hang up call directly to the agency using the numbers available on www.irs.gov/help/telephone-assistance and www.ssa.gov/agency/contact/phone.html
